The annual calls are coming in again from the mothers and grandmothers of young women going to college soon. They want our SAFE MKE Self Defense workshop, it teaches how to avoid violence and defend oneself for all ages and abilities.
Heading back to campus means fresh goals, new routines—and for young women, it should also mean having a personal safety plan.
Unfortunately, most students don’t think about what they’d do if they were ever confronted with violence. Most people in general don’t have a plan to avoid violence or defend themselves if necessary.
We teach a women’s personal safety class that helps students define their non-negotiables and create a proactive safety plan. One key principle we teach: situational awareness earns you time and space—and time and space earn you options. Staying off your phone, head on a swivel and being mentally present can be your first line of defense to avoid a threatening situation altogether.
Our students also learn that bad people don’t want attention. That’s why one of our most popular tools is a 120 dB personal alarm—pull the pin and it lets out a piercing sound that’s often enough to deter an attacker, especially if people are nearby. Another great tool is pepper gel. We love it because it sticks to the face, making it more effective, and people who have taken gel in security training say the gel is much more intense than the spray stream.
If you don’t have a tool, can’t get away, and your only option is to survive—you need to know the human body’s most vulnerable point: the eyes. That knowledge, combined with the right mindset and preparation, can make all the difference.
We exist to empower women to avoid violence and defend themselves wherever they are in their self defense journey.
