FBI data shows approximately 2.4 million firearm related background checks occurred in the month of March, 2020. That’s a record number of checks, equating to an 80% increase year over year.
Those increased firearm sales numbers are leading to a huge bump in people wanting gun safety and concealed carry permit training. In these uncertain times, people clearly want to be prepared to defend their families. That concern appears well warranted, as we recently shared a Facebook post regarding the release of seven high-risk sex offenders in Orange County, CA, amid the Coronavirus pandemic. In that situation, the District Attorney warned residents of the offenders likelihood to re-offend in the community. This new criminal release process is popping up all over the nation, and we expect more law abiding citizens to take preventive steps to protect themselves.
Recently, we were contacted by a former student whose elderly mother experienced a close call in a local grocery store parking lot. Young men in a vehicle were luring the 80 year old woman close to their car, and used the common distraction of needing directions to attempt to victimize her. Thankfully, she kept her distance and remained safe.
For many, we are living in desperate times, and that can lead to people taking desperate measures. Here are a couple tips to prepare and protect you and your loved ones. First, we recommend carrying whenever possible. Second, in our concealed carry classes, we are adamant about the importance of commitment to ongoing training. Concealed carry is not throwing your gun in the center console of your vehicle when you’re going somewhere you may feel unsafe. It’s about incorporating training into your lifestyle. It’s critical to build confidence and skills through practicing at the range and at home with a safe, empty gun. Practice moving your concealment garment, drawing your gun and getting a shot on target while moving. Check out this 5 point draw drill from the USCCA to help you on your journey!
Awareness of our environment, coupled with the skills to protect ourselves if needed, is something we should all possess. We’re glad to see more people taking responsibility for their security.
