We get phone calls on a consistent basis from people wanting to learn how to apply for a concealed carry permit.
Here’s your step-by-step guide to applying for a Wisconsin CCW permit.
1. Eligibility Check: Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria, including being at least 21 years old, a resident ( or military resident) of Wisconsin, not prohibited from possessing firearms under state or federal law, and completion of a firearms training course. If you have a Hunter’s Safety Education certificate or have been honorably discharged from the military, a training course is not required. However, it would be unwise to get a CCW permit and carry without understanding the importance of critical information taught in a CCW class such as, avoiding conflict, building de escalation skills, understanding the legal use of force in WI and legal aftermath of a self defense incident.
2. Find a Firearms Training Course: Look for a certified firearms training course offered by an approved instructor. MK Protection Strategies has top rated, approved instructors and a 5 star Google rating with thousands of students trained since 2016. 3. Complete the Training Course: Enroll in and successfully complete the live firearms training course. WI does not allow online training. Obtain a certificate from the instructor after completing the class.
4. Download/ complete the application form or apply online: Visit the Wisconsin Department of Justice website, or obtain the Concealed Carry Weapon License Application at your class.
5. Gather Required Documents: Collect necessary documents such as proof of training completion certificate from class, proof of identification (e.g., driver’s license), and any other documents specified in the application. Please note, you must update your current address in the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) system if needed and use that current address for this CCW application with the DOJ. If you use a different address than what is in the DMV system, you will be denied.
6. Pay the Application Fee of $40: If you apply online, pay with a card and if you apply in the mail, send in a $40 check or money order to the DOJ in Madison.
7. Submit Your Application: Most people apply online because it is quite efficient. Submit the completed application form, required documents such as training certificate or military discharge papers and application fee to the WI Department of Justice. If you prefer to submit your application by mail, the WI DOJ’s address in Madison is on page one of the application form.
8. Undergo Background Check: The Wisconsin Department of Justice will conduct a background check when you submit your application including a criminal history check, to determine your eligibility for a CCW license.
9. Wait for Approval: WI DOJ has 21 days to issue or deny the license.
10. Receive Your CCW License: Upon approval, your concealed carry weapon license will be issued and sent to you by mail. The license is valid for five years. If denied, you will receive a letter stating why you were denied and instructions for an appeal process if needed.
11. Stay safe, well practiced and familiar with your skills through consistent training and education. We recommend USCCA membership and this free USCCA Concealed Carry Guide to reference after class.
12. Renewal Reminder: Ensure you maintain your current address in the WI DOJ system. Keep track of your license expiration date and renew your CCW license before it expires to maintain your legal ability to carry concealed weapons in Wisconsin. You will receive a letter from the WI DOJ to renew 120 days prior to expiration. The fee to renew is $22.
